Why Our Technicians Don't Work on Commission

If you’ve ever had an air conditioning company come to your home for a repair and leave you holding a quote for a whole new system, you already know why this page exists.

It happens constantly in Florida. A homeowner calls about a system that isn’t cooling. A technician shows up, spends twenty minutes looking things over, and comes back with a tablet showing three replacement options – good, better, best. Somewhere between eight and fifteen thousand dollars.

Sometimes that’s honest. Systems do fail, and there’s a point where replacement genuinely is the right call.

But a lot of the time, it isn’t honest. And the reason has nothing to do with your air conditioner.

How Most HVAC Companies Pay Their Technicians

Across this industry, the standard pay structure is commission. The technician earns a percentage of what they sell you.

Fix a capacitor for $180? The technician makes a few dollars.

Sell you a $12,000 system replacement? The technician makes several hundred, sometimes more.

Now put yourself in that technician’s boots. He’s got a mortgage. He’s got kids. And two paths are sitting in front of him on your driveway – one that pays him almost nothing, and one that pays him a week’s wages in an afternoon.

Most people are good people. But no one should be put in that position, and no homeowner should have to guess which side of it their technician landed on. This has gotten worse in recent years, not better. A large number of the HVAC companies operating in Port St Lucie and across the Treasure Coast are no longer locally owned. They’ve been bought by private equity firms and national holding companies that acquire family businesses, keep the familiar name on the truck, and rebuild the pay structure around sales volume. The name stays the same. The incentives don’t.

How We Do It Instead

At Harmony Air, our technicians are paid an hourly wage.

That’s the whole policy. There is no commission. There is no bonus for selling equipment. There is no sales quota, no leaderboard, no monthly target anybody has to hit.

If our technician fixes your system for $180, he gets paid exactly the same as the day he installs a complete new system. He has no financial reason to steer you toward one over the other – which means when he tells you what your system needs, that’s simply what your system needs. We’d rather fix it. A repaired system means you call us again in three years for maintenance, and you tell your neighbor about us in the meantime. That’s a better business than a one-time sale to somebody who never wants to hear from us again.

What This Looks Like on a Service Call

We diagnose before we quote. We find out what’s actually wrong with the system before anyone starts talking about money.

We tell you if a repair will hold. And we tell you honestly if it won’t.

We show you what we found. Photos, readings, the failed part in our hand. You see what we see.

We give you the repair option first. If replacement is genuinely the better path, we’ll explain exactly why – the age of the system, the cost of the repair against the cost of the unit, the refrigerant it uses, and what we’d do if it were our own house.

We don’t run scripts. No tablet presentation, no three-tier pressure close, no “this price is only good today.”

Who You’re Actually Hiring

Harmony Air is owned and operated by JD Harmon, a third-generation HVAC technician. He served in the U.S. Army as a 91C, completed a five-year union apprenticeship, and worked his way up to service manager before founding Harmony Air in 2023.

He still answers the phone. He still runs service calls. And if there’s ever a question about a recommendation one of our technicians made, you’re one call away from the owner – not a call center in another state.

We’re licensed under CAC1822339, we service every brand, we’re a Trane dealer, and we back our installations with a 12-year parts and labor warranty.

Already Have a Quote in Hand?

If another company has told you that you need a new system, bring us the quote. We’ll come out, look at your equipment ourselves, and give you a straight answer about whether that recommendation holds up.

Sometimes it does, and we’ll tell you so. Sometimes it doesn’t, and we’ll show you the repair that fixes it instead.

Either way, you’ll know what you’re dealing with before you spend five figures.
